Cardiovascular Disease and Stem Cell Therapy

Cardiovascular Disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. It is a combination of both heart disease and stroke. It affects nearly one-in-three adult in the United States, which is over 800,000 deaths every year! Not only is it the leading cause of death in the US, but the percentage of the US population affected is steadily rising.

Scientists are using various types of stem cells to study the heart’s natural repair functions and test ways to induce those repair mechanisms in people who have heart conditions and damaged hearts.

The important thing to do when treating the heart is finding a way to heal it and undo damage that it has endured throughout the years. Some areas and methods of heart repair are being researched and experimented on right now, such as; cell transplantation, new approaches to deliver cells to the heart, and stimulating resident heart cells to generate new cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) and strengthen the heart.
